It is easy to start looking for memorial jewelry with the wrong question. Ring or necklace, silver or gold: those choices matter, but they come second. The first question is simpler and harder: what do you want to carry of them? Their face. Their name and the dates that bracket a life. The month they were born. A few words only the two of you would understand. Each piece of personalized memorial jewelry is built around one or two of those, and once you know which one you want, the choice gets much smaller.
This is Awareness Avenue's own guide, and the eight pieces in it are ones we sell. Everything below about what you can personalize comes from each product's current listing and its order form, checked on November 1, 2026. Where a detail isn't stated, we say so rather than guess.
Start with what you want to keep
Sort the options by the kind of memory they hold, and the eight pieces fall into four groups.
- A face. The Custom Photo Dog Tag Necklace and the Sacred Memory Necklace carry a photo you upload. The Cherished Pet Heart Necklace turns a photo of your pet into a laser-engraved portrait.
- A name and dates. The Solace Angel Charm Bracelet and the Guardian Angel Heart Bracelet carry a name and dates on a small charm. The Cherished Memorial Ring carries memorial engraving inside the band. The photo necklaces also take a name or dates alongside the picture.
- A month. The Guardian Wing Bracelet, the Guardian Angel Heart Bracelet and the Cherished Memorial Ring each hold a simulated birthstone in the month you choose. The Butterfly Bypass Ring holds two months: theirs and yours.
- Words. Some pieces let you write your own; others arrive with a fixed printed message chosen for that design. Knowing which is which matters, especially if the piece is a gift.
None of these is more right than another. A photo is the most literal choice; a birth month can be the most private, because only you know what it stands for. If you are drawn to symbols rather than names or faces, such as intertwined bands or infinity shapes, our article on the hug from heaven ring idea covers that route. This guide stays with pieces you personalize.
The eight pieces, and exactly what each lets you add
The Custom Photo Dog Tag Necklace
A photo dog tag on a ball chain. The order form asks for a photo of your loved one, a name and optional dates, and you choose one of five front headings: “Forever in my heart,” “My Guardian Angel,” “Gone but not forgotten,” “In Loving Memory” or “I'm always with you.” You can also add a private message on the back, at an added cost shown on the product page. The listing describes the photo as a photo transfer. It is PVD-coated 316L stainless steel in a silver or 18K gold PVD finish (a gold-tone coating on steel, not solid gold), on an adjustable 18 to 22 inch ball chain. See the Custom Photo Dog Tag Necklace.
The Sacred Memory Necklace
Two pendants on one chain: a dog tag with your photo printed on the front, and a cross. The form asks you to upload a photo, a date and an engraving or message. It allows up to 40 characters for the date and up to 120 for the message, and asks you to type the engraving exactly as you want it. The listing gives the dog tag as 29 x 50 mm and the cross as 32 x 20 mm, on a 24 inch curb chain, in PVD-coated 316L stainless steel with silver or 18K gold PVD options. The seller description also says each piece is custom-made to order, which matters for timing; see below. See the Sacred Memory Necklace.
The Cherished Pet Heart Necklace
For the loss of a pet: a flat heart pendant laser engraved with your pet's portrait and name, made from a photo you provide. AA asks for a clear, front-facing photo, and the product photos show examples, not your pet. It comes in PVD-coated stainless steel in silver or 18K gold PVD, on one 45 cm (17.7 inch) chain. See the Cherished Pet Heart Necklace.
The Solace Angel Charm Bracelet
A snake chain with LOVE beads, an angel charm and a round disc engraved with your loved one's name and meaningful dates. The angel charm stays as shown, and a fixed printed message card comes with it. It is 316L stainless steel with a silver PVD finish, adjustable with a lobster clasp and extender. See the Solace Angel Charm Bracelet.
The Guardian Angel Heart Bracelet
Three elements on a snake chain: a heart charm engraved with the name and dates you choose, a round simulated birthstone in one month, and a guardian angel, with LOVE station beads. The listing identifies the birthstone as cubic zirconia, so it is a month color, not a natural gem. It is 316L stainless steel with a silver PVD finish, adjustable with a lobster clasp and extender; the listing gives the range as 6.5 to 8.5 inches. See the Guardian Angel Heart Bracelet.
The Guardian Wing Bracelet
Two openwork angel wings around one round simulated birthstone in the month you choose. That month is the only personalization: AA's own product notes say this design has no engraving or editable card. It comes with a fixed printed message that begins “I am not a Widow, I'm a wife to a husband with wings,” so it is written for a wife who has lost her husband. It is PVD-coated 316L stainless steel in a silver, gold or rose gold finish, on a 6.7 inch chain with a 3 inch extension. See the Guardian Wing Bracelet.
The Cherished Memorial Ring
A ring that holds a month and your words together: an emerald-cut simulated birthstone in the month you choose, with small pavé accents on the shoulders, and your memorial engraving inside the band. Engraving is a required field, so plan the words before you order. It comes in S925 sterling silver, 18K gold vermeil or 18K rose gold vermeil, in whole US sizes 3 through 13, with a standard gift box and no printed card. If you need a size, our ring size calculator guide explains how to measure and double-check it, or how to size a ring from one the wearer already owns. See the Cherished Memorial Ring.
The Butterfly Bypass Ring
A butterfly with four stones (two marquise upper wings and two pear-shaped lower wings) in your loved one's birth month, beside a separate stone in your own birth month. The stones are birthstone-color zirconia, not natural gems. Personalization is the two months; the current order form asks only for those two choices. It is S925 sterling silver, with gold and rose gold finishes in 18K gold vermeil and 18K rose gold vermeil, on an open band with one adjustable fit. AA's note is to adjust it gently for comfort and avoid bending it repeatedly. A fixed card reads: “Those we love don't go away, they fly with us every day.” See the Butterfly Bypass Ring.

Choosing the words
Engraving space on small pieces is finite, and only one form here publishes a limit: the Sacred Memory Necklace, at 40 characters for the date and 120 for the message. On the other pieces the form does not state a character count. That is not the same as unlimited space, so keep it short, and ask support before ordering if your wording runs long.
Some practical ways to decide, offered as our own suggestions rather than rules:
- Name and years read cleanly. A first name and two years fit comfortably on a small disc or inside a band, and they are unlikely to date.
- Write the date the way you say it. If you always think of a birthday as a month and day, engrave it that way. The Solace form's example shows a year range and the Sacred Memory form shows a sample date format, but those are examples, not rules. The choice is yours.
- Use what they called you. A nickname, or what they called you, can mean more than a formal name, and it is short.
- Check the preview, then your spelling. Several forms say their text preview is illustrative. Proofread what you type, because what you type is what gets made.
Choosing the photo
Three pieces start from a photo, and they don't all use it the same way. The Custom Photo Dog Tag carries a photo transfer, and the Sacred Memory Necklace a printed photo, so both reproduce the picture itself. The Cherished Pet Heart turns your photo into a laser-engraved portrait, which is why AA asks for a clear, front-facing one.
Whichever you choose, a few things help. These are general photo sense, not product specifications:
- Choose a picture where the face is in focus and evenly lit, not one where they are small in a crowd.
- Pick an expression you'd want to see every day, not only the most formal portrait.
- For a pet portrait, a head-on photo with the eyes visible gives the engraving more to work with.

Timing and terms, before an anniversary or a service
A memorial piece may need to arrive by a date: a funeral, the first anniversary, a birthday that comes around anyway. Check these before you order.
- Engraving time. AA's shipping policy says custom jewelry with personalized text or similar engraving takes an additional 24 to 48 hours to produce, on top of standard handling. Standard handling for stock items is 1 to 2 business days before dispatch, and delivery estimates vary by destination.
- Made-to-order time. Made-to-order jewelry needs 10 to 15 business days of production before it ships. The current product settings for six of the eight pieces are not flagged as made to order: the Custom Photo Dog Tag, Pet Heart, Solace, Guardian Angel Heart, Guardian Wing and Butterfly Bypass. That flag alone is not a delivery promise, and it doesn't settle which return class a personalized order falls into. The Sacred Memory Necklace's description says it is custom-made to order, and the Cherished Memorial Ring's listing refers to made-to-order return terms. For any of the eight, ask support for an estimate if you have a date in mind.
- Returns. The refund policy offers free US returns within 14 days of receipt on stock items, and says made-to-order and customized items are covered by separate terms. Its made-to-order section says customized made-to-order pieces are final sale unless defective or covered by the Lifetime Warranty, and the made-to-order terms list added engraving among the things that make a piece customized. Because these pieces carry your words, photos or chosen months, ask support which terms apply to your order before you buy, rather than assuming.
- Warranty. The Lifetime Warranty covers defects in materials or craftsmanship. It does not cover loss or theft. For made-to-order pieces, AA's made-to-order terms add that damage from improper use, accidents or normal wear and tear is not covered.
If it's a gift for someone who is grieving
Buying memorial jewelry for someone else adds one more check: make sure the piece says what you mean, in words they would choose.
- Read the fixed card. The Guardian Wing Bracelet's message speaks as a wife who has lost her husband. The Butterfly Bypass Ring's card is about those we love flying with us. The Solace bracelet comes with its own fixed printed message. If the wording doesn't fit their loss, choose a piece with no card or one you write yourself.
- Ask before you guess. Names, nicknames, dates and birth months are easy to get slightly wrong, and on a memorial piece slightly wrong is very visible. If you can, confirm details quietly with someone close to them.
- Think about how they'll wear it. An adjustable bracelet or the adjustable dog tag chain avoids guessing a size; the Cherished Memorial Ring needs one.
Questions people ask
Can I make a memorial piece for a pet?
Yes. The Cherished Pet Heart Necklace is designed for it, with your pet's portrait and name. The photo necklaces accept any photo you upload, and the Sacred Memory listing mentions pets among the people and milestones it's meant for.
Are the birthstones real gemstones?
No. The birthstone pieces here use simulated stones. Most of the listings identify them as cubic zirconia or zirconia in month colors; the Cherished Memorial Ring's listing calls its center stone a simulated birthstone. They represent a month rather than claiming a natural gem.
Is the gold real gold?
It depends on the piece. On the Cherished Memorial Ring and the Butterfly Bypass Ring, the gold and rose gold finishes are 18K gold vermeil over S925 sterling silver. On the stainless steel pieces, gold means a gold-tone PVD coating on steel, not solid gold.
Can I add engraving to the Guardian Wing Bracelet?
No. AA's product notes say the design has no engraving or editable card; its personalization is the birth month. For a name and dates on a bracelet, look at the Solace Angel Charm or Guardian Angel Heart.
The short version
Decide what you want to carry first: a face, a name, a month or your own words. Then choose the piece built for it, write the words carefully, pick a photo you'd want to see every day, and check the timing and return terms before you order for a date that matters.
